Why Is My Hedge Turning Brown? Causes and Fixes

A hedge can look healthy for years, then develop brown patches in a matter of weeks. If you are asking, why is my hedge turning brown, the answer is rarely just one thing. The pattern of browning, the hedge species, recent weather and the condition of the ground all help identify the real cause. Acting early gives established plants the best chance of recovering and can prevent a small issue from becoming a long gap in a boundary hedge.

Why is my hedge turning brown in patches?

Brown patches often point to a localised problem rather than a failure across the whole hedge. Start by looking closely at where the discolouration appears. Browning on the windward side may be caused by drying winds, while damage concentrated at the base can suggest poor drainage, root disturbance or animal damage. Brown tips following a trim may indicate cutting at the wrong time, using blunt equipment or removing too much green growth.

It is also worth distinguishing between brown leaves and brown stems. A leaf that has turned bronze or brown may still be attached to a living shoot. Gently scratch a small area of bark with a clean fingernail. Green, moist tissue beneath the surface is encouraging; dry, brown tissue suggests that section has died back. Do this sparingly and in several locations, rather than removing bark from one stem repeatedly.

Some browning within the centre of a dense evergreen hedge is normal. Older foliage receives little light and will eventually shed. This is most common in established conifer hedges such as leylandii and Lawson cypress. If the outer surface remains green and vigorous, occasional brown material inside is usually not a concern. Browning that spreads to the outer face, however, needs attention.

The most common causes of brown hedge foliage

Drought and drying wind

Evergreen hedges continue to lose moisture through their foliage during dry, windy weather, including in winter. Their roots may be unable to replace that moisture when the soil is very dry, compacted or frozen. This can cause foliage to dull, turn reddish-brown or develop crisp brown tips.

Newly planted hedges are particularly vulnerable because their root systems have not yet spread into surrounding soil. Mature specimens can also struggle after prolonged dry periods, especially where roots compete with nearby trees, buildings or hard surfaces. In exposed parts of East Sussex, coastal wind can intensify moisture loss.

Water slowly and thoroughly around the root area when conditions are dry, allowing moisture to soak down rather than run away across the surface. A layer of organic mulch around, but not touching, the stems can help retain moisture and moderate soil temperature.

Waterlogging and root stress

Too much water can produce similar symptoms to drought. Roots need air as well as moisture, and saturated ground prevents them from functioning properly. Foliage may yellow first, then turn brown as roots decline. This is common in poorly drained clay soils, low-lying areas and places where water is directed towards the hedge from paths, roofs or compacted ground.

Do not assume that extra watering is the answer simply because a hedge looks brown. Check the soil several centimetres below the surface. If it is wet, sticky and smells sour, drainage may be the issue. Repeated waterlogging can lead to root diseases, which require a more careful assessment than surface treatment alone.

Over-cutting or poor pruning practice

Hedges need regular management, but they do not all respond to hard cutting in the same way. Many conifers, particularly leylandii, will not reliably regenerate from old brown wood with no green shoots. Cutting beyond the green outer growth can therefore leave permanent brown patches.

A healthy hedge should be trimmed so that the base is slightly wider than the top. This allows light to reach lower growth and reduces the risk of a thin, bare base. Sharp, clean tools also matter. Torn or crushed cuts heal poorly and can leave plants more vulnerable to stress.

Timing depends on the species and the scale of work. Light maintenance cuts are often appropriate during the growing season, while substantial reductions need careful planning. Before any hedge work, check thoroughly for nesting birds and avoid disturbing active nests.

Pests and disease

Pests and diseases can cause browning, but they should not be blamed without evidence. Look for webbing, tiny insects, unusual resin, cankers, blackened shoots or patches that are spreading despite suitable growing conditions.

Aphids, scale insects and mites can weaken foliage by feeding on sap. Fungal problems may cause dieback in individual shoots or whole sections, especially where airflow is poor and foliage stays damp. Box hedges deserve particular attention, as box blight and box tree caterpillar can cause rapid defoliation and brown growth.

Remove and dispose of badly affected cuttings carefully, and avoid moving contaminated material through the rest of the hedge with unclean tools. A correct diagnosis is essential before treatment, as pruning, watering or spraying the wrong way can make the underlying problem worse.

Salt, chemicals and physical damage

Hedges beside roads, driveways or the coast can be affected by salt spray. Browning is often most severe on the exposed side and may be worse after storms or cold weather. Salt can damage foliage directly and can also affect the soil around roots.

Physical damage is another frequent cause. Strimmers, vehicles, stored materials and building work can injure stems or compact soil over roots. Where a hedge has suddenly declined after nearby excavation, changes to ground level or construction activity, root disturbance should be considered. Damage may not become visible until weeks or months later.

What the pattern of browning can tell you

The appearance of the hedge provides useful clues. Brown tips with healthy growth behind them often indicate weather stress or trimming damage. A whole plant turning brown from the base upward can point to root failure. Individual dead branches scattered through an otherwise green hedge may be related to disease, shading or an old injury.

If only one species in a mixed hedge is affected, compare its needs with the surrounding plants. Beech, yew, privet, laurel and conifers all tolerate different conditions. A site that suits one hedge may be too wet, too exposed or too shaded for another.

Seasonality matters as well. Some evergreens bronze naturally in winter, particularly certain conifers, and regain their colour as conditions improve. This is different from brittle foliage, bare shoots and progressive dieback. Taking dated photographs every few weeks can reveal whether the problem is stable, improving or spreading.

How to help a browning hedge recover

The first step is to remove the pressure causing the decline. Correct watering, improve drainage where practical, protect the root area from compaction and avoid further cutting until the hedge shows signs of recovery. Do not feed a severely stressed hedge heavily in the hope of forcing new growth. Fertiliser cannot repair dead roots and may add further stress in dry soil.

Prune out clearly dead material only once you can identify live tissue, using clean, sharp equipment. On conifers, be cautious: cutting into bare old wood can leave a visible gap that will not fill in. For broadleaf hedges such as privet or laurel, recovery after careful pruning is often more reliable, provided the roots are healthy.

A hedge with widespread browning may need a staged restoration plan rather than a single dramatic cut. This protects the plant's ability to photosynthesise and retains screening while new growth develops. Where disease, poor drainage or structural root damage is involved, replacement may ultimately be more sensible than repeated remedial work.

When to ask for professional hedge advice

Seek professional help when browning is spreading quickly, affects a tall or established hedge, follows storm damage or appears alongside signs of disease. It is also sensible to obtain advice before reducing mature conifer hedges, where one unsuitable cut can permanently alter their appearance.
