Choosing the best trees for windy gardens is not simply a matter of finding the toughest-looking species. The tree must suit the soil, available rooting space, salt exposure, nearby buildings and the level of aftercare it will receive during its first few years.
In East Sussex, wind can be a year-round consideration. Coastal gardens may face salt-laden gusts, while inland properties can be exposed to strong prevailing winds across open fields or elevated ground. A well-chosen tree can provide structure, seasonal interest and valuable habitat. The wrong one may lean, dry out, lose branches or fail to establish a stable root system.
Exposure is about more than wind speed
Before selecting a species, look at how wind behaves in the garden. A site may be generally sheltered but funnel wind between houses, around a corner or through a gap in a hedge. Wind can also be more damaging where soil is shallow, compacted or regularly waterlogged, because roots cannot develop the wide, resilient anchorage that a tree needs.
Salt is another deciding factor near the coast. It can scorch leaves and buds, particularly on species that are otherwise hardy in cold or windy conditions. In these settings, evergreen foliage may offer useful shelter, but it also catches the wind throughout the year. Deciduous trees shed their leaves in winter and usually place less wind loading on their branches during the stormiest months.
The mature size of the tree matters as much as its early appearance. A small sapling can be planted at a safe distance from a house, boundary or overhead service, then become too large for the available space over time. Sensible species selection at the start avoids unnecessary pruning, conflict with neighbouring land and avoidable tree removal later.

There is no single best choice for every exposed plot. The following trees are generally reliable options when matched carefully to site conditions and given proper establishment care.
Hawthorn
Common hawthorn, Crataegus monogyna, is one of the most dependable native choices for an exposed garden. It tolerates wind well, supports pollinators with spring blossom and provides berries for birds in autumn. It can be grown as a small specimen tree or incorporated into a mixed boundary planting, where it helps create a more natural windbreak.
Hawthorn is tolerant of many soil types, although it does not welcome permanently saturated ground. Its thorns are worth considering beside paths, play areas and access routes.
Field maple
Field maple, Acer campestre, is a compact native tree with attractive yellow autumn colour and good tolerance of pruning. It performs well in many gardens, including relatively exposed inland sites, provided the soil drains reasonably well. Its manageable mature size makes it a practical choice where a larger maple would be inappropriate.
Young field maples benefit from protection against persistent wind while their roots establish. Once settled, they are notably adaptable and can cope with urban conditions as well as rural settings.
Whitebeam
Whitebeam, Sorbus aria, is particularly useful on dry, chalky and exposed ground. The pale underside of its leaves gives movement and contrast in the wind, while spring flowers and autumn berries add seasonal value. It is often a sound choice for the chalk landscapes found across parts of Sussex.
It is not a tree for very wet ground, and it needs room for its rounded crown to develop. Choose a position away from structures rather than relying on repeated reduction pruning to keep it contained.
Rowan
Rowan, Sorbus aucuparia, is a lighter-canopied tree that allows some wind to pass through rather than presenting a dense wall of foliage. It offers spring flowers, orange-red berries and good autumn colour, making it well suited to gardens where wildlife value is a priority.
It is more suitable for exposed inland gardens than for the harshest salt-spray locations. On dry, thin soils, watering through the first few growing seasons will make a real difference to establishment.
Crab apple
A crab apple brings far more than blossom to a garden. Its fruit can persist into winter, providing food for birds, and its smaller scale suits many domestic plots. Several varieties offer good resistance to common disease problems, although the right variety should be chosen for the specific site.
Crab apples prefer a position that is exposed to fresh air but not repeatedly battered by severe coastal winds. They can work especially well where a hedge, fence or existing planting breaks the worst of the gusts.
Scots pine
Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris, has a naturally open form and is well adapted to windier, well-drained sites. Its flexible canopy and deep-rooting potential make it a strong option for larger gardens, estates and more open land where there is sufficient space for its eventual height.
This is not a tree to plant close to buildings or beneath overhead lines. Like all larger trees, it should be inspected periodically as it matures, particularly after major storms or where it overhangs areas used by people.
Austrian pine
Austrian pine, Pinus nigra, is valued for its dark evergreen needles and good tolerance of exposed and coastal conditions. It can make an effective part of a shelterbelt or screen, particularly where salt and dry ground limit more delicate species.
It grows into a substantial tree, so it is best reserved for larger sites. Dense evergreen foliage creates more wind resistance than the canopy of a deciduous tree, making appropriate spacing, good rooting conditions and long-term management essential.
Holm oak
Holm oak, Quercus ilex, is one of the strongest evergreen choices for coastal gardens. It copes well with salt-laden air, wind and dry conditions once established. Its leathery leaves provide year-round screening and shelter, while its dense crown can create a useful backdrop for more vulnerable planting.
The trade-off is scale. Holm oak can become a large, broad tree, and it should not be treated as a small garden screen unless there is a realistic plan for its mature dimensions and future management.
Yew
Yew, Taxus baccata, is highly tolerant of wind and can grow in sun or shade. It is often used as a formal hedge, but when allowed to develop it makes an impressive small to medium evergreen tree. It is long-lived, responds well to careful pruning and offers dense cover for birds.
All parts of yew, apart from the red flesh around the seed, are toxic if eaten. That should be considered carefully where grazing animals, pets or young children have access.
Alder
For exposed ground that is damp or prone to seasonal waterlogging, alder can be a very practical option. Common alder, Alnus glutinosa, is a native tree that tolerates wet soils far better than most of the species listed here. It grows quickly and can help provide early shelter on larger properties.
Its speed of growth means it needs adequate space and periodic inspection. It is generally better suited to larger gardens, rural boundaries and wet ground than to a confined ornamental bed.
Sea buckthorn
Sea buckthorn is technically a large shrub or small tree, but it deserves consideration in the most exposed coastal situations. It is extremely tolerant of wind, salt and poor sandy soils, with silver-grey foliage and orange berries. Its roots also help stabilise loose ground.
It suckers readily and can spread beyond its original planting area. It is best used where this vigorous habit is an advantage rather than a maintenance problem.
Match the tree to the site, not just the view
A tree’s success depends heavily on planting position. Avoid placing a young tree at the bottom of a wind tunnel, directly beneath services or too close to walls that restrict root growth. Give it enough space to reach its natural form, allowing for branches and roots rather than only the current pot size.
For a very exposed garden, a layered approach is often more effective than relying on one large specimen. A mixed boundary of shrubs, smaller trees and carefully positioned evergreens filters the wind gradually. A solid barrier can create damaging turbulence on its sheltered side, whereas varied planting slows and disperses gusts more naturally.
Soil preparation also deserves attention. Trees planted into compacted ground may appear stable at first but develop restricted roots, leaving them more vulnerable in high winds. Improving the planting area, maintaining a clear mulched circle and watering in dry periods gives a young tree the best chance of forming a healthy root system.
Planting and aftercare make the difference
Plant during the dormant season where possible, avoiding frozen or waterlogged soil. Set the tree at the same depth it was growing in the nursery, with the root flare at or just above the finished soil level. Planting too deeply is a common cause of poor establishment and long-term decline.
A short stake positioned on the windward side can steady a newly planted tree, but it should allow some natural movement. A tree that is held completely rigid does not develop the trunk strength and root anchorage it needs. Check ties regularly, loosen them as the stem expands and remove staking once the tree is stable.
Watering is particularly important during the first two or three summers, even with species described as drought tolerant. Give water slowly enough for it to soak down to the roots, rather than applying frequent shallow amounts. Mulch helps conserve moisture and protects the soil, but keep it clear of the trunk to prevent decay.
Know when a tree needs professional attention
Leaning after planting, cracked soil around the base, broken branches and visible root movement are all signs that should be assessed promptly. Following a storm, do not attempt to remove large hanging branches or climb a damaged tree. The risks can be serious, especially where a tree is near buildings, roads, footpaths or power lines.
For established trees, careful pruning can reduce the risk associated with weak, damaged or excessively extended branches, but indiscriminate cutting is not a solution to wind exposure. Poor pruning can create large wounds, encourage weak regrowth and make a canopy less stable over time.
