
How to Identify Hazardous Branches Safely

A branch does not need to fall to present a risk. It may be hanging above a driveway, resting against another limb, or quietly weakening over a footpath after high winds. Knowing how to identify hazardous branches helps property owners act before damage, injury or an emergency call-out becomes necessary.
The safest approach is to observe from the ground, keep people clear of the area and seek professional advice where there is any uncertainty. Trees are valuable parts of gardens, estates and the wider East Sussex landscape, but safety has to come first when a branch is compromised.
What makes a branch hazardous?
A hazardous branch is one that has an increased likelihood of failing, or one that could cause harm if it does fail. Risk is not determined by the branch alone. Its size, condition, position and the targets beneath it all matter.
For example, a small dead twig high in a mature oak may be of little practical concern if it can only fall into a planted border. A large limb with decay above a pavement, parked vehicles, play area, roof or public access route requires a very different response. This is why a professional tree inspection considers both the condition of the tree and what is around it.
Recent storms, prolonged dry spells, saturated ground and changes around the root zone can all alter a tree's stability. A branch that seemed sound last season may need attention now.
Visible signs of hazardous branches
Many warning signs can be recognised from a safe distance. Do not climb the tree, use ladders or stand beneath a suspect limb to get a closer look. Use binoculars if necessary and inspect in good daylight.
Dead or dying wood
Dead branches are often the clearest sign of a potential problem. In winter, it can be harder to distinguish dead wood from dormant growth, but brittle twigs, missing bark, a lack of buds and branches that contrast sharply with the rest of the canopy can all indicate decline. During the growing season, a branch with no leaves while surrounding growth is healthy deserves attention.
Dead wood does not always fall immediately. It can remain attached for years, then fail during wind, rain or under its own weight. Larger dead limbs should be assessed promptly, particularly where they overhang buildings, access routes or neighbouring land.
Cracks, splits and tears
A visible crack along a limb, at a branch union or near the trunk is a serious warning sign. Some splits develop slowly, while others appear after a storm or when a heavily laden branch has been put under sudden strain. Fresh, pale wood exposed at the break, torn bark or a limb sitting at an unusual angle can suggest recent failure.
A split does not automatically mean a branch will fall that day, but it should not be ignored. Avoid moving vehicles, garden furniture or people underneath it. The forces within a damaged limb are not predictable, and attempting to remove it without suitable equipment can make the situation worse.
Weak branch unions
Where two stems or branches meet, the shape of the union matters. A strong union usually has a visible ridge of overlapping wood where the branch joins the parent stem. A narrow, tight V-shaped union may be weaker, especially if bark appears trapped or compressed between the stems. This is known as included bark.
Included bark prevents the stems from forming a solid connection. As both sides increase in size, pressure can build and the union may split. Multiple-stemmed trees, fast-growing specimens and branches with an uneven canopy load can be particularly prone to this issue. It takes trained judgement to decide whether careful pruning can reduce the loading or whether more substantial work is needed.
Cavities, decay and fungal growth
Hollows, cavities and fungal brackets can indicate that wood decay is present. They do not automatically mean that a tree or branch is unsafe. Many veteran trees support important wildlife habitats and can remain structurally stable despite internal decay.
The key question is where the decay is, how extensive it is and whether enough sound wood remains to support the branch. Fungal fruiting bodies at the base of a branch, soft or crumbling wood around old wounds, and large cavities near a union all justify a professional inspection. Do not probe cavities or remove fungi, as this can damage the tree and obscure useful evidence.
Hanging, crossed or rubbing branches
A limb caught in the canopy after breaking is an immediate concern. It may be held temporarily by smaller branches, then drop without warning as the tree moves in the wind. Keep well away and restrict access beneath it.
Crossing and rubbing branches are less urgent but can create future defects. Repeated contact strips bark and opens wounds that may allow decay organisms to enter. Appropriate formative pruning can prevent a small structural issue becoming a significant one, particularly on younger trees.
Assess the area beneath the branch
The same defect carries different consequences depending on its location. When checking a tree, look beyond the canopy and consider how the space is used. Is the branch above a conservatory, gate, shed, road, footpath, seating area or neighbouring garden? Are children, staff, visitors or members of the public likely to pass underneath?
Also consider the branch's size and reach. A falling limb may strike well beyond the point directly below it, particularly if it bounces, rolls down a slope or catches another branch on the way down. For commercial sites, estates and public spaces, regular documented inspections are a sensible part of managing tree-related risk.
Look after storms and changing conditions
High winds are an obvious time to check trees, but inspections should take place only after conditions are safe. Wind can leave branches partially detached, cause fresh cracks at weak unions and expose faults that were hidden within a dense canopy. Never walk beneath storm-damaged trees simply to investigate.
Heavy rainfall can also matter. Saturated soils affect root stability, while the added weight of water on foliage can place extra strain on limbs. In contrast, drought can lead to dieback, leaf loss and delayed stress responses that become evident months later.
Construction work, soil compaction, trenching, changes in drainage and repeated vehicle movements near trees can affect their health and anchorage. If the setting around a mature tree has changed, it is wise to include it in the next inspection rather than waiting for visible decline.
When to call a qualified tree surgeon
Professional help is required whenever a branch is large, damaged, high up, close to a target or likely to need climbing equipment, a mobile elevated work platform or controlled lowering. It is also the right choice if you can see a split union, decay near a major limb, a hanging branch or signs that the tree as a whole may be unstable.
A competent arborist can assess the tree from ground level and, where needed, carry out a closer examination. The recommendation may be selective deadwood removal, reduction to relieve weight from a weak limb, bracing in specific circumstances, monitoring, or removal of the affected section. The correct solution depends on the species, age, condition, habitat value and surrounding risk.
Good tree work is not simply about removing everything that looks untidy. Work should respect the tree's long-term health and be planned in line with recognised standards such as BS 3998:2010. Before any work begins, check whether the tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order or lies within a conservation area, as consent or notice may be required.
What not to do with a suspect branch
Do not use a ladder and chainsaw to tackle an overhead limb. Branches can twist, spring, roll or fall in a direction that is impossible to control from a domestic ladder. Cutting a partly broken limb may also release stored tension suddenly.
Avoid pulling on the branch with ropes, attaching it to a vehicle or attempting to shake it free. These methods can bring down more of the canopy than expected and may damage the tree further. If a branch has fallen across a highway, power line or other utility, keep clear and report it to the relevant emergency service or network operator.
A sensible inspection routine
For most gardens, a seasonal visual check from the ground is a practical starting point. Pay particular attention after storms and before periods when gardens, paths or outdoor spaces will see heavier use. Mature trees, trees near buildings and trees in public-facing areas may need a more formal inspection schedule.
Take clear photographs from a safe position if you spot a change. Images can help show whether a crack is progressing or a branch is declining, and they give a tree surgeon useful context before attending. However, photographs are not a substitute for an on-site assessment where there is an immediate safety concern.
If a branch looks questionable, treat the area beneath it with caution rather than waiting for certainty. A timely inspection protects people and property while allowing trees to be managed carefully, proportionately and with respect for their place in the landscape.
