Why Is My Tree Leaning Suddenly? What to Do

A mature tree that has stood straight for years should not suddenly start leaning without a reason. If you are asking, “why is my tree leaning suddenly?”, treat the change seriously, particularly after high winds, prolonged rain or ground disturbance. A lean can be harmless in a young tree that is naturally growing towards light, but a new or worsening lean may indicate root failure, soil movement or structural damage.

The first priority is to keep people, pets, vehicles and garden furniture away from the likely fall zone. Do not try to pull the tree upright, cut large branches off it or attach ropes without professional advice. These actions can make an unstable tree fail sooner and can put you directly in harm’s way.

Why is my tree leaning suddenly?

Trees lean for several reasons, and the cause is not always obvious from the canopy alone. A tree’s roots, trunk, crown and surrounding soil work together. When one part of that system is compromised, the tree may begin to move.

Wind damage and storm loading

Strong winds can push against a broad canopy with considerable force. Even if no branches have broken, repeated gusts may loosen roots in saturated ground or worsen an existing weakness on the sheltered side of the tree. This is especially common with evergreen trees, which retain foliage through winter, and with trees growing on exposed sites across East Sussex.

After a storm, look for a fresh gap or crack in the soil on the side opposite the lean. This can indicate that the root plate - the mass of roots and soil anchoring the tree - has begun to lift. A tree with a raised root plate can be unstable even when its foliage still looks healthy.

Waterlogged or moving ground

Heavy rainfall softens soil and reduces the grip around roots. Clay soils can swell when wet and shrink during dry periods, while sloping ground may shift gradually after prolonged rain. Drainage leaks, damaged pipes and changes to nearby water flow can also alter conditions around a tree’s root zone.

A newly leaning tree may therefore be a symptom of what is happening beneath the surface rather than a problem in the trunk itself. If the tree is close to a bank, ditch, retaining structure or recently altered ground, an arborist may need to consider both tree stability and the wider site conditions.

Root damage or decay

Roots can be damaged by excavation, construction work, vehicle movements, compacted soil or changes in ground level. Removing too much soil can expose roots, while adding soil over them can reduce the oxygen available to the root system. The effects are sometimes delayed, with a tree appearing unaffected for months or years before it starts to decline or lean.

Decay can also weaken roots without producing dramatic above-ground symptoms. Fungal growth around the base of the tree, deadwood in the crown, thinning leaves or a hollow-sounding trunk may all justify further inspection. Fungi are part of a healthy ecosystem, so their presence does not automatically mean a tree is dangerous. However, certain fruiting bodies at the base can be associated with decay that affects structural strength.

A split, crack or weakness in the trunk

A tree may lean after a forked stem begins to separate, a crack opens in the trunk or a previously hidden cavity enlarges. Included bark is a common issue in trees with two or more stems growing tightly together. Instead of a strong union of wood, bark becomes trapped between stems, creating a weaker connection that can split under wind loading.

Fresh cracks, peeling bark, new bulges, exposed pale wood or a sudden change in the position of major branches should all be taken seriously. Avoid standing beneath the canopy to inspect these signs closely. A visual assessment from a safe distance is enough to decide whether urgent help is needed.

An uneven or overextended crown

Trees naturally grow towards available light. Over time, this can create a canopy that is heavier on one side, particularly where neighbouring trees have been removed or a building has changed the light and wind exposure. A tree may have compensated for this gradual imbalance for many years, then lean more noticeably after a storm or loss of a large limb.

The solution is not always to remove the tree. In some cases, carefully specified pruning can reduce wind resistance or rebalance selected growth while retaining the tree’s form, habitat value and contribution to the landscape. Any pruning should be planned to recognised BS 3998:2010 tree work recommendations and should not be treated as a quick fix for serious root instability.

Signs that require urgent action

A small, longstanding lean is different from a tree that has moved in the past few hours or days. Seek prompt professional advice if you can see one or more of the following signs:

  • A newly exposed root plate, lifted turf or a widening crack in the soil near the base.

  • Fresh splits in the trunk, separating stems or large hanging branches.

  • A lean towards a house, road, footpath, parked vehicle, play area or overhead line.

  • Soil heave, recent excavation, floodwater or obvious decay around the base.

If there is an immediate risk to people or property, keep well clear and arrange an emergency tree assessment. Where branches or a tree are in contact with electrical lines, do not approach or attempt any work yourself. Contact the network operator as well as an appropriately qualified tree contractor.

What you can safely check from the ground

You do not need to climb, dig around or interfere with the tree to gather useful information. From a safe position, compare the lean with photographs taken before the change, if you have them. Note whether the trunk is moving in the wind, whether the ground is cracking or lifting, and whether any major limbs have shifted position.

It is also helpful to consider recent events. Has there been a storm, extended wet weather, a drainage issue, excavation nearby, removal of neighbouring trees or impact from a vehicle? This background helps an arborist understand whether the lean is likely to be new, progressive or part of the tree’s natural shape.

Keep children and pets away from the area until the tree has been assessed. If practical, move vehicles and other valuable items from the potential fall zone without walking beneath unstable branches.

What not to do with a leaning tree

It is tempting to reduce the visible problem by cutting off the heaviest branches or tying the trunk to a post. Both approaches can be risky. Removing substantial limbs changes the forces acting on a tree and may trigger failure in an already weakened stem. Ropes and straps can damage bark, fail under load or pull a compromised tree in an unpredictable direction.

Avoid piling soil around the base, cutting exposed roots or digging to investigate decay. These measures can worsen root stress and make a professional assessment more difficult. Young, recently planted trees can sometimes be re-staked, but this is a different situation from a mature tree that has suddenly shifted. The age, species, size, soil type and target beneath the tree all affect the appropriate response.

How a professional assessment helps

A competent arborist will assess the whole tree rather than focusing only on the direction of the lean. This includes the root zone, trunk condition, branch structure, crown weight, signs of disease or decay, soil conditions and nearby targets. The purpose is to establish the level of risk and recommend proportionate work.

Depending on the findings, this may mean monitoring a stable, historic lean; carrying out sympathetic crown work; removing damaged limbs; installing support systems in suitable circumstances; or dismantling a tree that cannot be retained safely. For trees subject to a Tree Preservation Order or located within a conservation area, permission may be required before non-emergency work takes place. Emergency action may still be necessary where there is an immediate danger, but good records and professional advice remain valuable.
