If an ash tree on your property looks thin at the top in midsummer, with leaves turning black or branches dying back, those may be early signs of ash dieback. It is a serious disease affecting ash trees across the UK, and the challenge is that symptoms do not always appear all at once. A tree can look only slightly stressed one season, then decline much more quickly in the next.
For homeowners, estates and site managers, the real concern is not just tree health. It is what the disease means for safety, nearby roads or footpaths, neighbouring boundaries and the wider landscape. Knowing what to look for helps you act at the right time - neither ignoring a developing problem nor rushing into unnecessary work.
What is ash dieback?
Ash dieback is caused by a fungal disease known as Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. It affects common ash trees and can lead to progressive decline, canopy loss and, in many cases, structural weakness. Young trees often succumb quite quickly, while older trees may survive for several years with varying levels of infection.
That variation matters. Not every ash tree with the disease fails immediately, and not every thinning crown means ash dieback. Drought stress, root damage, compaction and other pathogens can produce similar symptoms. A proper assessment looks at the whole tree, its condition over time and its setting.
The main signs of ash dieback
The most recognised signs of ash dieback are visible in the leaves, shoots, branches and crown. In the early stages, leaves may wilt, darken and shrivel while still attached. You may also notice blackened leaf stalks and patches of dead foliage sitting unevenly through the canopy.
Another common symptom is dieback at the tips of shoots and small branches. This often starts in the outer crown, where new growth should be strongest. Instead of a full, healthy summer canopy, the tree begins to look sparse and patchy.

As the disease progresses, dead twigs and branches become more obvious throughout the crown. In some cases the top of the tree thins first. In others, decline appears more scattered. The pattern can vary with age, exposure and overall vitality.
Signs of ash dieback in different seasons
Timing can make symptoms easier to spot. In late spring and summer, leaf loss and wilting often stand out most clearly. By midsummer, an infected ash may already look noticeably thinner than nearby healthy trees.
Later in the year, dead shoots and bare sections of canopy become easier to see as surrounding vegetation drops away. Winter can reveal the branch structure more clearly, which helps when assessing how much dieback is present and whether brittle deadwood is accumulating.
This seasonal pattern is one reason one-off visual checks have limits. A tree may look reasonable in one month and much worse a few months later. Where a tree stands near a target such as a garden seating area, driveway, road, school boundary or public footpath, repeat inspection is often the sensible approach.
Epicormic growth and what it means
One feature that often worries property owners is the sudden appearance of small shoots growing from the main stem or larger limbs. This is known as epicormic growth. It can be the tree's response to stress, as it attempts to replace lost foliage lower down.
On an ash with dieback, epicormic growth is not usually a sign of recovery in any lasting sense. It more often indicates that the crown is under pressure. A tree may produce fresh growth on the trunk while continuing to decline above.
That is why it is important not to judge condition by green growth alone. A tree can still leaf out to some extent and yet be significantly compromised.
When the disease becomes a safety issue
The practical question is when ash dieback moves from a health problem to a risk problem. The answer depends on the amount of dieback, the presence of lesions, how much deadwood is present, and what sits within falling distance.
Ash can become brittle as decline advances. Branches may fail without much warning, particularly in exposed conditions or after strong winds. Where infection is severe, decay and weakness around branch unions or the main stem may also become a concern.
A tree in the middle of a field is different from one overhanging a greenhouse, lane or play area. The level of intervention should reflect that difference. In lower-use areas, monitored retention may sometimes be appropriate. In higher-risk settings, pruning or removal may be the responsible option.
What ash dieback can be mistaken for
Several tree problems can resemble ash dieback at first glance. General stress can cause sparse foliage. Honey fungus may contribute to decline. Poor drainage, soil disturbance and construction impacts can all reduce vigour and lead to crown thinning.
There is also the simple fact that mature trees naturally carry some deadwood. A small amount of dead twig material does not automatically point to a serious disease issue. The pattern and extent matter far more than one isolated symptom.
This is where professional inspection has real value. An experienced arborist will look at crown condition, bark lesions, shoot death, structural defects and site use together, rather than relying on a single sign.
What to do if you spot signs of ash dieback
If you think an ash tree may be affected, start by observing it carefully from ground level. Note whether the canopy is thinning, whether leaves are blackening, and whether there are dead branch tips or lesions on young growth. If the tree is close to people, buildings, parked vehicles or roads, take the concern more seriously from the outset.
Avoid climbing the tree or attempting to remove large limbs yourself. Infected ash can behave unpredictably, and weakened branches do not always fail in the way a sound tree would. Even work that looks straightforward from the ground can carry significant risk.
The next step is to arrange an assessment by a qualified tree professional. In some cases, monitoring and periodic reinspection will be enough. In others, remedial pruning may help manage deadwood and reduce immediate hazards. Where decline is advanced or the location is sensitive, removal may be the safest course.

Managing affected ash trees responsibly
There is no simple cure for ash dieback, so management is usually about balancing safety, conservation and practicality. Some ash trees retain ecological value even in decline, and some show a degree of tolerance. That does not mean every infected tree should be removed as soon as symptoms appear.
Equally, waiting too long can make work more hazardous and reduce the safe options available. Trees with substantial canopy loss, extensive lesions or clear structural weakness need careful judgement. Decisions should be based on condition and location, not on fear or guesswork.
